DiDi safety features in Australia
Every DiDi ride in Australia comes with an in-app SOS button that calls 000, live trip sharing with Trusted Contacts, anonymised phone numbers and a 24/7 Incident Response Team.
Before the ride
- Driver screening: drivers pass safety verifications and background checks, plus the accreditation or authority their state requires, before they can drive. See driver requirements.
- Driver education: every driver completes compulsory safety training before their first trip.
- Preview Driver: you see the driver's name, profile photo and Star Rating before pickup. Check the car and the face match before getting in.
- Facial verification: the driver's selfie is matched against their approved profile photo so someone else cannot drive on the account.
If the person or the car does not match the app, do not get in and report it. DiDi treats mismatched drivers and vehicles as serious complaints.
During the ride
| Feature | What it does |
|---|---|
| SOS / Emergency Button | Calls 000 and shows your location on screen |
| Share Trip | Sends your live GPS location to Trusted Contacts |
| Trusted Contacts | Friends or family who can follow your trips |
| TripCheck | Alerts you if the trip shows unusual stops or turns and offers the Safety Toolkit |
| Private numbers | Rider and driver numbers are anonymised before and after the trip |
| Audio Recording | Records the trip audio for the Incident Response Team, in some states and territories |
| DiDi Sal | In-trip safety assistant, launched first in Brisbane |
When to press the Emergency Button
Use it only in a real emergency: if your life is in danger, you have been physically or sexually assaulted, or you, another rider or the driver is seriously injured. Pressing it during a trip also notifies your Trusted Contacts. Outside a trip, call 000 directly.
Setting up Trusted Contacts
- Open the sidebar menu and tap Safety Centre.
- Tap Trusted Contacts and add names and mobile numbers.
- When you start a ride, tap Share My Trip on the home screen.
Audio Recording
From the home screen tap the blue Safety Shield, then Record Audio, then Set up, and allow microphone access. Tap Start to record every future ride from pickup to drop-off. Recording stops automatically at the end of the trip. Neither person is told if the other is recording; both are only told the feature is available. DiDi does not listen live, but its Incident Response Team can access recordings after a complaint or dispute, and may share them with police where the law requires. If you do not want to be recorded, you can cancel and request another ride.
After the ride
- Hidden addresses: exact pickup and drop-off addresses are hidden once the trip ends.
- Unmatch: stop being matched with a driver again.
- Rating: rate the driver from 1 to 5 stars in My Trips. Ratings cannot be changed after you submit, so check before tapping submit.
Reporting a problem
Report aggressive or impolite behaviour, discrimination, harassment, a driver asking for cash or an accident through the app. DiDi's 24/7 Incident Response Team handles safety reports and works with police where needed. If a driver refuses you because of an assistance animal, DiDi refunds any cancellation charge. More routes on contact support.
Rules for riders
DiDi's community guidelines ask everyone to treat others with respect. Riders can be suspended for inappropriate behaviour, such as leaving a serious mess (which also brings a cleaning fee, see fares), harassment or discrimination. Children must use an approved restraint and under-18s must ride with an adult (how to book a ride).
