The DiDi Rider app in Australia

In Australia you ride with the DiDi Rider app from the App Store or Google Play. Sign-up needs a mobile number, name, email and a card or PayPal.

Which app to download

Australian riders use DiDi Rider, found in the App Store and on Google Play (the store listing is called "DiDi Rider: Affordable rides"). Drivers use the separate DiDi Driver app, covered in the driver app guide.

Signing up

  1. Install DiDi Rider and open it.
  2. Register with your mobile number, name and email address. An SMS verification code arrives during sign-up.
  3. Add a debit or credit card (PayPal is also accepted). The app will not let you book until a payment method is on file.

That is all you need to request a ride. Profile changes, password resets and account deletion are in account.

Useful features

  • Split Fare: invite friends after requesting to share the cost evenly.
  • Up to 2 extra stops: via the plus sign in "Where to?". See how to book a ride.
  • Safety Toolkit: SOS button that calls 000, Share Trip, Trusted Contacts and, in some states and territories, Audio Recording (set up from the blue Safety Shield, Record Audio). See safety.
  • Velocity Points: link a Velocity Frequent Flyer or Virgin Australia Business Flyer account to earn 1 point per $1 of eligible spend. See promo codes.
  • Unmatch: stop being matched with a driver you did not like.

Languages

The rider app can be set to English, Spanish, Japanese or Russian through Settings, Language.

Visitors with a DiDi China account

An account from DiDi's Greater China app also logs into DiDi Rider, so visitors do not need to register again. If the driver needs to call you about the pickup, your number must have international roaming switched on. Otherwise use the in-app instant messaging. Note that an overseas card may need your bank's authorisation; see payment.

Business use

DiDi Australia only offers personal accounts for now. For work trips you can still download a tax invoice for each ride (tax invoice) and earn Velocity Points for your employer through Virgin Australia Business Flyer.

Questions and answers

Which DiDi app do I need in Australia?

Riders use DiDi Rider (listed in the stores as DiDi Rider: Affordable rides). Drivers use a separate app, DiDi Driver.

Can I use my DiDi China account in Australia?

Yes. DiDi says the same account works in the DiDi Rider app. Keep international roaming on so the driver can call you, or use the in-app messaging instead.

How do I change the language in the DiDi app?

Open the sidebar menu, then Settings, then Language. The rider app is available in English, Spanish, Japanese and Russian.

Does DiDi have business accounts in Australia?

Not yet. DiDi currently offers personal accounts only, although a business can earn Velocity Points through Virgin Australia Business Flyer when staff ride.

Why is DiDi not sending my verification code?

The code is sent by SMS to the number you register or change to. Check the number is correct and can receive SMS; if it still fails, use the support routes in the app or DiDi's official social channels.
