DiDi fares in Australia

A DiDi fare in Australia is a base fare plus distance and time charges, with GST, tolls and state levies added. Rates vary by state and city; the app shows an estimate before you confirm.

How a DiDi fare is built

DiDi's Australian help centre breaks every fare into the same parts:

Part What it covers
Base Fare A flat amount charged once the trip starts
Distance Fare Charged on distance travelled. Varies by city and can step up after a threshold distance
Time Fare Charged for the time from pickup to drop-off, including time in traffic
Short Distance Fee Only in Brisbane and Geelong, on trips under 7 km
GST and other taxes Added to the fare

On top of that, the final amount can include:

  • Tolls on the route
  • State Government Transport Levy where your state charges one
  • CTP insurance premium component
  • Waiting fees and cancellation fees
  • Changes from Dynamic Pricing at busy times

Fares differ between states and territories. DiDi points riders to the fee schedules in its Legal section for the exact rates, which is also where any change would be published first.

Getting a price before you ride

  1. Type your destination in Where to?.
  2. Tap the pickup location in the top bar if you need to change it.
  3. The estimate appears below each vehicle type, so you can compare Express, Max and other options before choosing. See ride types.

The estimate excludes tolls, and waiting time is only charged if it happens, so the final fare can differ.

Dynamic Pricing

When demand is high, DiDi multiplies the base, time, waiting and distance fares to bring more drivers onto the road. Tolls and levies are not multiplied. The multiplier changes with the day, time and location. You get an in-app message when it applies, the multiplier icon sits under the fare estimate before you tap CONFIRM, and the fare breakdown after the trip shows it again.

Waiting fee

The driver waits 5 minutes at the pickup point for free. After that a waiting fee of $0.55 per minute runs until the trip starts. If the trip is cancelled instead, only the cancellation fee applies, not both. Details on cancelling are in cancellation fees.

Tolls

Toll amounts are added automatically to the final fare, so you should never pay a toll in cash to the driver. If you did, contact support with the trip details and DiDi will review it.

Cleaning fees

If a rider makes a mess or damages the car, the driver can claim a cleaning fee with photos and a professional cleaning receipt. The full amount goes to the driver and you receive the details. DiDi's driver policy sets maximum amounts by level:

Level Example Maximum
1 Small spills or sand inside $20
2 Mess outside needing an exterior wash $21 to $40
3 Significant liquid mess inside needing steam cleaning $41 to $80
4 Extensive mess such as vomit or blood inside $81 to $150

You can appeal a cleaning fee you think is wrong through the app.

Checking what you paid

Every trip's receipt and tax invoice are in My Trips, and a copy is emailed after the ride. See tax invoice and receipts. If you see a pending charge before the ride, it is usually an authorisation hold; payment explains it.

Questions and answers

How much does DiDi charge per km in Australia?

DiDi does not publish one national per-km rate. The distance fare varies by city and threshold distance, and the full rate card sits in the fare schedules in DiDi's Legal section. The quickest way to see a price is the fare estimate in the app.

How do I get a DiDi fare estimate?

Enter your destination in "Where to?" and set the pickup point. The estimate appears under each vehicle icon before you confirm.

Are tolls included in the DiDi fare estimate?

No. Tolls are added automatically to the final fare after the trip, so the estimate you see before confirming does not include them.

What is DiDi's waiting fee?

After the driver has waited 5 minutes at the pickup point, a waiting fee of $0.55 per minute applies until the trip starts. If the trip is cancelled, only the cancellation fee is charged.

Why is my DiDi fare higher than usual?

During high demand DiDi applies a Dynamic Pricing multiplier to the base, time, waiting and distance fares. Tolls and levies are not multiplied, and the multiplier is shown before you confirm.
