DiDi to and from the airport in Australia

DiDi drivers collect riders only in an airport's designated rideshare pickup area. Airport fees and tolls are added to the fare, and you request the ride when you are ready rather than pre-booking.

Getting picked up at the airport

Airports run their own rules for rideshare. DiDi's guidance to drivers is to collect riders only in the designated rideshare pickup or holding area, which most Australian airports have. As a rider:

  1. Collect your bags first, then request the ride, so the driver is not waiting.
  2. Follow the terminal signs to the rideshare pickup area. If the signs are unclear, check the airport's website.
  3. Set your pickup pin inside that area, since that is where the driver has been told to collect riders.
  4. Match the car and driver photo before getting in (safety).

The driver waits 5 minutes free; after that the waiting fee of $0.55 per minute starts (fares).

Going to the airport

DiDi Australia does not take advance bookings. For an early flight, open the app a little before you need to leave, check the fare estimate and request the ride. If you travel with a lot of luggage or a group, choose Max for a larger vehicle (ride types). For long airport runs in cities where it is available, DiDi Travel with driver offers is another option (negotiate).

What an airport ride costs

The fare is worked out like any other DiDi trip: base, distance and time fares plus GST. Airport rides can also carry:

Charge Notes
Airport fee Not subject to the Dynamic Pricing multiplier
Tolls Added automatically after the trip; not shown in the estimate
State Government Transport Levy Where the state charges one
Dynamic Pricing Applied at busy times to base, time, waiting and distance fares

The fare breakdown in My Trips lists each item, and the tax invoice is there too for work travel (tax invoice).

Velocity Points on airport rides

If you have linked a Velocity Frequent Flyer or Virgin Australia Business Flyer account, airport rides earn 1 point per $1 of eligible spend like any other ride. The airport fee, tolls, GST and any discount are excluded from eligible spend. Choose which account earns before you book. Details in promo codes.

For drivers: airport trips and queues

  • Accept the airport terms: drivers only receive airport requests after accepting the airport's terms and conditions in the DiDi Driver app under Settings, Legal.
  • Use the holding area: wait in the designated rideshare holding area and do not leave the queue, or you lose your place.
  • Short trip priority: if you take a short trip from the queue (actual distance 12 km or less) and return to the airport within 12 hours, you go into a priority queue.
  • Brisbane Airport: drivers need an E-Tag from Linkt, RTA, RMS or Eway Interlink to pick up there.

Questions and answers

Where do I meet my DiDi at the airport?

At the airport's designated rideshare pickup area. Most Australian airports have one; follow the rideshare signs from the terminal, and check the airport's own website if you cannot find it.

Can I book a DiDi to the airport in advance?

No. DiDi Australia does not offer pre-booking at present, so request your ride shortly before you need to leave and allow time for the driver to arrive.

Is there an airport fee on DiDi?

Airport trips can include an airport fee, which DiDi lists among the charges not affected by Dynamic Pricing. It appears in the fare breakdown along with any tolls.

Do I earn Velocity Points on airport rides with DiDi?

Yes. Velocity members earn 1 point per $1 of eligible spend on both airport and non-airport rides, but the airport fee, tolls and GST do not count as eligible spend.

Why can't some drivers pick up at Brisbane Airport?

DiDi requires drivers to hold an E-Tag to collect riders at Brisbane Airport. Drivers without one acknowledge at sign-up that they cannot do those pickups.
